Fourth Year Students in the Department of Chemistry offered Mentorship on Preparedness for the Job Market

On March 31, 2023, the Department of Chemistry held a mentorship seminar for final year students on 'Preparedness for the Job Market'. They were taken through CV and cover letter writing, smart preparation for an interview, as well as interpersonal relationships. The event was held at Millenium Hall 1 and was attended by well over 100 final-year students. It was facilitated by Mr. Brian Maghanga, Export Sales Manager, Zena Energy, Ms. Margaret Wacera, HR Manager, Naturesurf Systems Ltd, and Ms. Lucy Kamau, Assistant Dean of Students, FST-UoN.

NEWLY ACQUIRED PORTABLE POTENTIOSTAT

The Department of Chemistry received a potentiostat on February 2023 from Programme Migration and Diaspora of GIZ in their support to Dr. Fredrick Mwazighe as a returning expert from Germany. The Ivium potentiostat (Vertex.1A.EIS) with capability for impedance spectroscopy, in addition to the basic electrochemical techniques, is an important addition to the Department’s research capacity.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS-Hands on NMR Training Workshop 31st July to 4th August 2023

The Kenya National NMR Centre (KNMRC) based  at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, Kenya, is hosting a hands-on NMR training workshop 31st  July 2023 to 4th  August 2023. This workshop is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry/Pan African Chemistry Network and is aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Kenyan scientists in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopic techniques.

DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR ON INNOVATIONS BY DR. JOSEPH MWANIKI

The Department of Chemistry has organized a seminar on Innovations to be held on Friday 24th February 2023 from 9am-12pm in Room 119. The title of the presentation is Robotics and Automation of Laboratory Experiments using locally available materials by Dr. Joseph Mwaniki. The presenter will be showcasing his six(6) innovations showcased during the Kenya Innovation Week which was held on 6th December 2022 at Sarit Center, in Westlands, Nairobi.

 

10th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action 23rd-29th October 2022

This year, Kenya marked the 10th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action that takes place in the last week of October since 2013 under the leadership of UNEP and the World Health Organization. The activities for the 10th Edition were organized by the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Nairobi and spearheaded by Dr. Faridah Hussein Were who is an Advisory Council Member of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint. The main sponsor of these activities was Basco Paints Products.

The 10th International LEAD POISONING PREVENTION WEEK OF ACTION, 23RD TO 29TH OCTOBER 2022

This year, Kenya will be joining the Global Community in marking the 10th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action (ILLPWA), between the 23rd and the 29th of October 2022 under the leadership of UNEP and the World Health Organization.

The focus this year’s is Enhancing Efforts Towards the Elimination of Lead Paints
