The University of Nairobi through the Department of Chemistry partnered with BASF, one of the world’s leading chemical company, to produce liquid hand wash soap which was donated to the urgent need areas as part of the company’s global “Helping Hands” initiative.
The two institutions believe that the current pandemic can be controlled if we all work together by following government guidelines as well as taking special action to make a contribution to the communities in which we operate. We all have a role to play to help alleviate the impact of the pandemic.
“The demand for hand wash has surged since the outbreak of the pandemic which has no cure yet but can mostly be prevented through the frequent washing of hands,”said Michael Gotsche, Vice-President, Africa and Managing Director BASF East Africa Ltd. “BASF has worked with the University of Nairobi to begin the formulation and production of handwash at the university’s Detergent Production Unit. Our donation will provide help in vulnerable areas where it is most needed as the infection numbers continue to climb,” he said.
In addition to the donation of 8,000pcs 500ml bottles of hand wash, BASF will contribute to the development of technical expertise and best practices by supporting the university’s Detergent Production Unit to enhance local production of quality hand wash and sanitizers leveraging on the company’s global expertise.
“The production and donation of such quality and affordable handwash to the counties is a testimony that partnerships between Universities and Industries are a critical bridge in development. It can create positive impact on the community,” said Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kiama Gitahi. “The donation is consistent with our key value of CARE and the University’s mission to impact on communities through its core mandates”.
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to individuals and corporates who continue to advance the fight against the pandemic with their commitment and support through their various strengths. We are in this together and we will get through it together,” said Gotsche.
