DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY 1ST INAUGURAL ANNUAL CULTURAL DAY

The Department of Chemistry  celebrated its first ever Annual Cultural Day on the 14th of June 2024. The day was  set aside to celebrate cultural diversity in the Department under the theme “Our Diversity Our Unity”. The Chief Guest was our very own Professor Emeritus Prof. Raphael Munavu who is currently the Chairperson of The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms in Kenya.

 

Staff members celebrated their diverse culture from different communities in the Department from traditional food delicacies to traditional marriages, Naming of children during child birth to leadership and traditional zilizopendwa music from diverse communities in the Department. This event was graced by the Acting Dean, Prof. John Onyari who in his speech congratulated the Department for holding the first ever Cultural Day in the Department.

 

Chairman of the Department Prof. David Kariuki in his remarks congratulated the Staff for turning up to celebrate this inaugural Day and committed that this will be done annually to remind ourselves the importance of our culture and that Our Diverse Culture should bring us together and encouraged staff to embrace unity.

 

The Chief Guest Prof. Raphael Munavu encouraged Staff and members from other Departments to embrace the diverse culture in the University and to plant indigenous trees in their various spaces to protect the environment from the harsh climatic conditions which was recently witnessed in the country. He added that all the different communities in the country are related and that they originated from the same place. He gave an example of the Kalenjin tribe and the Luos that these communities originated from Egypt and they share some traditions for example Child Naming.

 

During this auspicious occasion, members of staff & students were recognized by the Chairman of the Department for being the best researchers, Industrious and long serving members of staff by being awarded the Certificate of Recognition.
