The Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi in collaboration with the International Science Program (ISP) Sweden, through KEN01 project, organized a breakfast meeting to celebrate the IUPAC Global Women and Girls in Science on 17th May 2023 at Arziki conference cente, Chiromo Campus, University of Nairobi.
The theme of the breakfast meeting was “Breaking Barriers in Science” more specifically “Anxiety of the uncertain Future”. It targeted final year female students in Science who are set to graduate this year. Ms. Mwanamaka Mabruki, CAS, East Africa community, Dr Violet Okech-Helu, a consultant Psychiatrist /councellor and Ms. Ivy Asango, Product Manager, Global Slacker Enterprises gave presentations that discussed the anxieties and challenges women and girls face as they navigate the working world and, the metal issues that may afflict them. This was followed by an engaging Q/A session that gave the participants an opportunity to engage the facilitators on various issues that they had.
It was evident from the lively discussions that ensued the concerns raised were critical and need to be addressed in order to better prepare girls as they complete their studies at the university and enter the job market.
