The Kenya National NMR Centre (KNMRC) based at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, Kenya hosted its second training workshop on 24th-27th May 2022.
The workshop was sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry/Pan African Chemistry Network and its aim is to enhance the capabilities of Kenyan scientists in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques.
The participants from various Universities and research institutions were selected through a competitive process and 12 out of the 100 applicants were successful.
The training workshop was officially opened by the Associate Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation & Enterprise Prof. Hutchingson who represented the Vice Chancellor. The A.VC challenged the participants to take advantage of the rare opportunities of such trainings and utilize the 4-day training well.
The Chairman, Department of Chemistry Prof. D.K. Kariuki, welcomed all the guests and participants to the training and urged them to take advantage of the facilities the Department offers. In his speech, he acknowledged the contributions the Royal Society of Chemistry has made in facilitating the events in the Department including the KNMRC workshop.
"The Royal Society of Chemistry in addition to previous support established the Pan African Chemistry Network (PACN) in 2007 and through a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Nairobi, housed the headquarters at the Department of Chemistry. It is worth noting that since then the PACN under the Local Chairmanship of Prof. Shem Wandiga and later under Professor Jacob Midiwo has achieved milestones in supporting, training and conducting conferences in various chemistry disciplines across Africa. At the University of Nairobi, the RSC was instrumental in supporting the shipping of the 400MHZ NMR that it is in the process of commissioning.
Vice Chancellor, Sir, The RSC through PACN, just a few weeks ago supported the Department of Chemistry in the Nairobi Innovation Week, where two of exhibitions were awarded prizes. The Department of Chemistry had a total of five innovations including the two departmental product lines, the Detergent Production Unit and the Essential Oils Production Unit.
The workshop included series of lectures in the morning, followed by group discussion and hands-on learning sessions in the afternoon where participants got the opportunity to generate and process NMR data.
