The KNMRC based at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi is hosting its 2nd Hands-on NMR training workshop from 4th-7th October 2022. KNMRC was established with the funding received from National Research Fund(NRF).
The training workshop is sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry/Pan African Chemistry Network(PACN) with the aim of enhancing the capabilities of Kenyan Scientists in NMR techniques. 12 participants from different universities & research institutions were selected from over 70 applications received.
Chairman Department of Chemistry Prof. David Kariuki in his address, welcomed all the participants to the training workshop and challenged them to take advantage of the NMR training workshop and the facilities the Department offers e.g NMR machine as this presents a rare opportunity to them being the only few(12 participants) selected among the more than 70 applications received. He thanked the Royal Society of Chemistry/PACN for supporting the 2nd KNMRC training workshop for the second time and especially Dr. Andrew Shore, Programme Manager responsible for the PACN from the Royal Society of Chemistry for coming to give a talk in the Departmental seminar and gracing the opening ceremony.
In her remarks during the opening ceremony, Associate Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi Prof. Margaret Hutchinson acknowledged that the Department of Chemistry has distinguished itself as a hub of academic scholarship & with a strong reputation for attracting research funding & industry partners.
"As you recall, the inaugural KNMRC webinar held on August 12th 2021 to sensitize all stakeholders regarding services provided by KNMRC, Iam happy to note that more than 322 participants from various universities, research institutions and industries from different countries registered for the first webinar demonstrating the high demand for NMR services in the region."
I am also glad to note that the NMR training being done at the Department is supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry/PACN as part of their activities to achieve the objectives of creating a self-sustaining science based in Africa by building the capacity of African Scientist to solve local knowledge.
Indeed the demand for NMR training locally & regionally is very high & I encourage you to continue to work with partners like RSC/PACN & NRF Kenya to equip Kenya & Africa Scientists with knowledge & skills in the use & application of this very important analytical technique in various fields such as Drug discovery from medicinal plants, agriculture & industry applications. Such training workshops encompassing various universities, industry & community engagements are aligned with our University of Nairobi strategic plan & an on-going efforts to enhance research, innovation, and enterprise and to create a globally competitive and adaptive chemistry workforce to meet the requirements of a rapidly industrializing Kenya & global economies."
Dr. Andrew Shore, Senior programme Manager responsible for the Pan Africa Network at the Royal Society of Chemistry in his address during the opening ceremony acknowledged what RSC via PACN Kenya hub has done by sponsoring such an important event which he described it as a land mark event." This NMR training course presents a unique opportunity to the participants with hands-on experience on the technique , and learning theoretical and practical aspects. I hope that you the participants establish new collaborations and the learnings from this course, will be shared with your colleagues at your institutions". A key aim of PACN is to facilitate collaboration across Africa and Internationally. It brings the African Chemistry community together through attendance and participation in conferences and webinars. We enable networking, support career progression, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
