The Department of Chemistry Staff & students paid a courtesy call to the 2nd lady of the republic of Kenya Her Excellency, Dr. Joyce Kithure on Thursday May 15, 2025 at the Deputy President's Residence in Karen, Nairobi.

I am deeply grateful to each of you — Faculty, Technical staff, and students — for joining me here today."
Her Excellency introduced her guests of the day to the project the office of the 2nd lady is running across the country entitled SaVE Communities which focuses on Science Adding Value to the Environment & Community. "We are gathered here today for a purpose greater than ourselves to begin a collaborative journey that brings Science out of the classroom and into the heart of our communities. My project, the SaVE community- Science Adding Value to the Environment and Community is aimed at addressing some of the challenges our community face and the solutions of which can be provided by the collective Knowledge and Skills of all of us Kenyans in the STEM space. This project is not just about research or academic achievement — it is about addressing some of the challenges our community faces, challenges whose solutions lie within the collective knowledge and skills of all of us Kenyans in the STEM space.
I firmly believe that science must serve society and as we look around our neighborhoods — whether in urban centers or rural villages — we see issues like limited access to clean water, environmental degradation, poor sanitation, and health disparities. These are problems we can solve, not only through policy or funding, but through innovation, creativity, and the application of scientific knowledge.
Chemistry, as a foundational science, has the potential to offer practical, homegrown solutions to many of these challenges and with the talent and dedication found right here in this room, I am confident that together, we can make a real difference."
