As part of community Outreach, the Department was happy to receive Sunday school children from Adonai Gospel Church on April 25, 2024 to take them through our laboratories and the equipment. The aim of this visit was to expose them to the University environment in order to motivate them as they study. Some of them are in high and majority of them are in lower primary.

Prof. David Huffman grew up in a small farming community in central Illinois and attended college in Greenville, South Carolina.  After college he managed a package plant for biological wastewater treatment.   A volunteer lecture in a high school class led to an enjoyable year teaching science, math, and history courses.  The ease of this experience led him to begin a master’s degree in Inorganic Chemistry at Illinois State University under the direction of Dr. Douglax X.

The Department of Chemistry organized for mentorship talk which was  held on April 19, 2024 at the Department of Chemistry, Seminar Room 119 targeting fourth year students who are set to graduate in September 2024. This was one among the many series of mentorship talks organized by the Department to prepare students for the job market.

The Department of Chemistry through the Departmental mentorship committee organized career mentorship  workshop targeting all  fourth year students undertaking Chemistry programmes on Friday 22nd March 2024. The aim of this workshop is to prepare students for job market as they transition from the University to the outside world.

The Kenyan National NMR Centre (KNMRC) based at the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, Kenya, is hosting a hands-on NMR training workshop on July 29 –August 2, 2024.

The Department of Chemistry through KEN-01 team organized a brainstorming workshop on 15th September 2023 held at Arziki Restaurant, Chiromo Campus on the re-establishment of Women in Chemistry(WIC) from 8.30am-11am. This workshop was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (Professor Leonidah Kerubo), the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry (Professor David K.

Gender Workshop 2 themed “Empowerment of Women in Basic Sciences Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was held on 29th September, 2023 from 9.00 am - 2.00 pm at the Arziki Conference Hall, Chiromo Campus, University of Nairobi.

Lead exposure was identified as one of the major emerging policy issues during the second International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) in 2009. The ICCM launched the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead in Paint (GAELP) as a voluntary initiative under the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNEP in order to protect human health and the environment. The International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (IPPWA) was launched in 2011 and it takes place in the last week of October since 2013.

The Department of Chemistry held a mentorship seminar on October 13, 2023, for third- and fourth-year students on Career Mapping and Preparedness. The event was facilitated by Mr. Edison Mochiemo, of KCB, and Mr. Livingstone Makori, of Corporate Career Academy. This was one in a series of events organized by the department meant to equip the students with soft skills required in the job market.

The Department of Chemistry through KEN-01 project organized training on public speaking from Wednesday October 4 2023 to Friday October 6 2023 for selected students who recently graduated from the Department. This training need was identified during the breakfast meeting held in May 17 2023 for female students organized by the Inorganic Research Group(KEN01) project.This training was sponsored by Denis Foundation and KEN-01 project.
