The Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi, through the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) Project, is recruiting 2 M.Sc. students as outlined below:
Two (2) MSc Projects in Chemistry
• Applicants must be a holder of a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in Chemistry or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi (UoN) Senate
• Applicants can either be those who have completed their first year (MSc theory, Chemistry option) or fresh applicants registered at the department of chemistry, University of Nairobi
Project 1 description: This project will investigate the composition and characterization of microplastic waste from selected cities in Kenya. Various analytical techniques will be employed to determine the composition and characteristics of these microplastics. These techniques may include Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, which can provide detailed information about the chemical structure and functional groups of the polymers. Furthermore, thermal analysis techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) will be used to evaluate the thermal stability and decomposition behavior of microplastics.
Project 2 Description: This research will focus on the synthesis of carbon and metal oxide nanostructures for use in the photocatalytic degradation of environmental contaminants. The morphological, structural, and textural features of these nanostructures will be studied. Additionally, the photocatalytic mechanisms involved in the degradation process will be investigated to acquire a better understanding of their potential uses in environmental remediation.
