Phytochemical Investication of Murraya Koenigii L. Spreng Leaves for Antimicrobial Compounds

Phytochemical studies were carried out on Murraya koenigi l. spreng leaves of family Rutacea. The dried leaves powder was subjected  to cold percolation using (i) n-hexane (ii) DCM:MeoH 1:1 (v/v),crude extract was obtained after vacuo rotary evaporator. Another sample of crude extract was obtained by Soxhlet extraction using (i) n-hexane (ii) DCM:MeoH 1:1 (v/v).Thin layer chromatography was carried out on crude extract. Antimicrobial tests were carried out on crude extract. All extracts showed substantial antimicrobial active towards staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.

Compounds were then isolated using column chromatography with silica gel 60,70-230 mesh (Merck Germany).Antimicrobial test was carried out on isolated compounds which showed one spot on TLC plates. Isolated compounds showed enhanced antimicrobial activity as compared to crude extracts. The compounds were subjected IR spectroscopy and GC-MS and fifteen compounds were identified as per computer database library. Palmitic acid,2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-7-methyl-5-oxo-3,5-dihydroindolizine-6-carbonitrile,Methyl retinoate,17-(1-acetoxy-ethyl)-10,13-dimethyl-3-oxo-2,3,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17-dodecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthrene-11-yl(ester).Benzenemethanimine,pentamethyl-a-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl,caryophyllene oxide. 1-(3-Methoxy-2-nitrobenzyl) isoquinoline,vitamin E, Linoleic acid, Epiglobulol and juniper camphor.
