Chemical Case Study of Kenyan Industries (Magadi Soda)

Soda ash production in Kenya is done at Lake Magadi. Magadi soda company was established in 1911 is the second largest producer of soda ash. The Trona mined from Lake Magadi is refined and converted to soda ash which has a variety of applications in glass making, electrolyte, water softener and sodium chloride. In addition to soda the lake liquor is used in production of sodium chloride which is used in manufacture of industrial salt and animal salt.

The current chemistry curriculum for secondary schools and colleges requires the study of production of soda ash and salt and specifies the understanding of how it happens at Lake Magadi. This project was undertaken with an aim of providing a source material that students can use it to understand the processes that take place at lake magadi.
