Analysis of Physico-Chemical and Biological Water Quality Contaminants in Mlolongo River

This research was carried out to establish the concentrations of biological contaminants in Mlolongo River. It was also to determine the level of physiochemical parameters to gauge their negative effect to the environment and people living around the river.  The health hazard posed by the possibility of dangerous concentration of contaminants prompted for the study. By the fact that the surrounding people depend on the river, there could be a risk of health if the river was not safe for usage.

Five sites were identified in the river and samples taken from each. Water from each sample was stored well and used to determine the concentration of physiochemical parameters and coli forms down the river. The spots were approximately 200 meters apart starting from the source of the river at is Mlolongo Dam. The conductivity meter, pH meter and membranes were employed in trying to measure concentration of the parameters downstream.

The water was found to have progressively increasing concentration of salts and coli forms downstream. The concentration of the contaminants was high. The water was found unsafe for human and animal usage. The contaminants build up was probably done by the people who used the river. Industrial waste also contributed to increase of biological contaminants into the river.

The water was found to be unsafe for human consumption and dangerous to live near. The government should therefore come up with sensitizations programmers, alongside strict policies and legislation to clear inhabitants near rivers and also discourage empting industrial waste in the river.
