Phytochemical Analysis of the Root Bark of Millettia usaramensis for Antiplasmodial Activity

 

 

 

In this study, the chemical constituents of the root bark of Millettia usaramensis (Fabaceae family) were extracted, isolated and identified.

 

The dried and ground root bark of Millettia usaramensis was extracted twice with the CH2CL2: MeOH (1:1) by cold percolation for 24 hrs at room temperature.

 

 

The extract was then concentrated into an oily residue using a Rotary Evaporator. The residue was then packed in a column containing Silica Gel and using Analytical Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plates, fractions were obtained and combined. The fractions were then isolated using Preparative TLC plates and crystallization methods.

 

Five compounds were isolated from this plant of which one was a new compound (Compound 5) 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods were then used for structural elucidation of these isolated compounds.
